Yes, I Still Do My Own Makeup

Mandee with long dark hair, dark eye makeup and burgundy lipstick, wearing a black choker and gray top.

Blind, wide awake, and playing with makeup. Apparently, that was the plan the other night.

Since losing my vision last year, I’ve had to change up my creative outlets a tad. Sketching, painting, tattoo designs, and makeup were all ways I liked to express myself. Figuring out what that looks like now has taken some experimenting.

The creative itch apparently did not get the memo.

With makeup, I’m tweaking how I apply it and working with muscle memory. There’s a lot my hands still remember, even when my eyes can’t check their work.

And I’m still painting. We’re just calling it more “abstract” now. 😂

There’s something good about making room for the little things that feel like you. Especially when so much of your life has involved adjusting to changes you never ordered.

Makeup is one of those things for me. A little time to play, try something, and enjoy myself. I’m still figuring out how to do things differently, and I want room for that figuring-out to be fun sometimes, too.

Going blind has changed a lot about my everyday life. My interest in making things and expressing myself has survived quite nicely. The techniques are getting a few revisions.

Side-by-side close-up and full views of Mandee’s colorful phoenix artwork, with raised wings and long curling tail feathers.

That’s a little piece of the Canes side of CCC: the everyday interests and personality that come along with living with a disability. There’s room here for experimenting, adapting, and enjoying what we create along the way.

Maybe your thing is makeup. Maybe it’s music, making something, or a little routine you’ve kept through a lot of change. I’d love to hear about it.

x, MM 💜
