Parenting, family life, and learning as we go.

  • Finding Our Own Way

A mother and her young child, seen from behind, walk across a grassy area toward swings in a wooded park. Both hold the mother’s mobility cane. A purple heart covers the child’s head.

This is how I explore the world now, with my little boy beside me. We get outside together, have our little adventures, and make memories we can look back on. Going blind has changed how I get to do that, and I’m still learning to make peace with some of those changes.

I’m learning how to move through the world differently, and he’s still discovering so much of it for the first time. Between toddlerhood and me adjusting to blindness, there’s a whole lot of figuring things out happening around here.

Getting out together sometimes takes a couple of extra steps now, like arranging transportation or planning a little further ahead. We work those details out and get on with our day. There are still places to go, things to explore, and memories to make together.

To me, this photo holds a little piece of our story: my cane, his little hand alongside mine, and the two of us finding our own way.

Being blind is part of my parenting now. It affects how I plan things and how I get around. Alongside all that adjusting, I’m still his mom, wanting to share the world with him and enjoy the little person he’s becoming.

We’re going to keep finding ways to do that. Some will take help. Some will take a little creativity. I’m grateful for the people who help make those moments possible, and I want more of them—the ordinary, sweet ones that end up meaning so much.

That’s part of what I want to make room for here at CCC: everyday life as it looks for each of us. Different families, different needs, different ways of connecting. A place to share those moments and hear how other people are finding their way, too.
